Manchester City in Ghoulam?
Manchester City will be eyeing Napoli’s left-back, Faouzi Ghoulam in the January transfer window, according to a report from Algeria.
Algeria’s football news source claims to have been informed by ‘reliable sources’ that Pep Guardiola has the same interest as Liverpool and Chelsea to get the 26-year-old after losing Benjamin Mendy with a severe injury.
Ghoulam is rated as one of the best left-backs in Serie A, and some even believe he is better than Juventus defender Alex Sandro but due to problems between him and Napoli, Ghoulam has not signed a contract extension and is likely to be a free agent Next June.
There have been reports in recent days from Italy that Ghoulam will actually sign a new contract, but information from Algeria is contradictory and they know that Napoli will consider the transfer window in January to avoid losing one of their best players in vain.
The Algerian national team player has been linked with a move to the previous Etihad Stadium and there are even some stories earlier this year that City has planned to exploit its contract by making a big offer. In the end, the club signed a contract with Benjamin Mendy, but Mendy is now injured.
It makes sense if Guardiola will target Ghoulam in January because Ghoulam has the perfect profile. He was able to play out the back and integrate it into a complex system such as that used by Maurizio Sarri at Stadio San Paolo.
Before the deal can be done, Ghoulam will face City twice in the Champions League, alongside Napoli in Group F. As with Mendy last season, this will give Guardiola a chance to witness how to play the player from close range before potentially making an offer for the player.
